O SS-31 se concentra na membrana interna mitocondrial com afinidade >1000x, ligando-se especificamente à cardiolipina. A cardiolipina é essencial para: (1) organização dos complexos da cadeia respiratória em supercompostos, (2) atividade do citocromo c, (3) manutenção do potencial de membrana mitocondrial. Com o envelhecimento e estresse oxidativo crônico, a cardiolipina se oxida e degrada, reduzindo a eficiência mitocondrial.
